Engrish~!

Continuing on the Japanese theme...

I remember as a kid seeing those ridiculous statements on Japanese stationery with the cute cartoons and all. Cracked me up with all the terrible misspelling and grammar. Of course, its fine to make mistakes and all but their slogans were so far off the mark that sometimes, they had ridiculous meanings or worse still unintended puns that were just really funny.

Engrish.com is a place where you can find some fine examples of the Japanese/English dialect known as Engrish.

Lots of Engrish from everything imaginable, food packaging, stationery, storefronts, menus etc.

Japanese Design Ethic and Elvis

Its fun to see someone take a dig at his own country/culture. Here, this Jap dude makes fun of how Japanese copy stuff and like try to add something different just to make it stand out. Using pictures of stupid hairstyles based on Elvis'.

New Trends In Football Management

One of the best footie mags out there is Four Four Two, in tribute to the formation which is a staple in the world of football, the most basic and common formation used by every team from your secondary school team to Brazil. For years on end, the 4-4-2 system has proved popular and successful, offering a good balance in defence and attack.

Yet a new trend has emerged where the 4-4-2 is becoming a system of old and a modern tactical revolution is taking place. English clubs, traditional 4-4-2 proponents, offer some examples. The likely reason for this being the new internationl, cosmopolitan atmosphere to club football. In truth, this new system has been used in Europe for long periods but now we begin to see that a lot of the successful clubs (the table toppers in England, Spain and Italy) all use the same system.

Newcastle
Shearer and Bellamy and now Shearer and Kluivert and Souness proposing Shearer and Owen, possibly a dream England strike pairing. His club is stuck some where in mid table. Whilst problems with prima donnas and a change in management might have something to do with Newcastle's predicament, they have underperformed with the 4-4-2.

Liverpool
A team in formational transition. They've adopted various systems and its taking the Reds some time to understand the new way but at least they're chasing 4th spot. Rafa's old club Valencia, used a lone striker formation and won La Liga and the UEFA Cup. Early on there was Cisse or Baros alone up front, Kewell and Luis Garcia as supporting attackers and Gerrard in a new attacking role in the middle. With the arrival of Morientes, its likely they will adopt a 2 striker system. Benitez's mentality is that his team should be able to quickly change formations to adapt and not stick to a rigid 4-4-2. This is what underlines the new revolution in footie tactics.

Everton
Overperforming in 4th place. They used Marcus Bent alone up front for the first half of the season to get to where they are. New signing Beattie would fit the lone striker role well. Bent was always more of a forward than an outright centre forward in any case.

Arsenal
3rd right now they don't really use a 4-4-2 either. When they're defending it might look more or less like a 4-4-2. But in attack they shift formations constantly, largely because they don't have a definite central striker. Bergkamp likes to play behind the striker, in the hole. Reyes drifts wide left and sometimes operates as a winger. Henry runs all over the place and was never a striker, he was converted. In my opinion, they use a strikerless system, with Henry/Bergkamp/Reyes in free roles.

Man Utd
2nd in the table. The devils use a horse faced Dutchman up front, supported by a gangster, a guy with frizzy hair and a gay guy who likes ballet dancing on the pitch as their strikeforce. Fergie tried to change early on, buying Veron and hoping that he would be the final piece to his jigsaw in a system that would differ from the 4-4-2 but his Ginger hero wouldn't fit into the hole behind the Horseman. Exit Veron, enter Gangster boy. Gangster boy fits into the hole perfectly behind the horseman. (anal sex pun intended) Ginger then lines up next to insane Irish guy where he belongs and now Manyoo look back on track.

Chelsea
Top of the Premiership, they employ a lone striker system that is the perfect example of the new formation. Mourinho is the man behind the change at Chelsea, which used to rely on Gudjohnsen and Hasselbaink, who between them shipped loads of goals. The difference now is a watertight defence. Largely thanks to a 5 man midfield and not just John Terry alone. Porto used the same system en route to the Champions League title last season.

Its not just the big clubs either. Bolton, Charlton and Crystal Palace employ lone striker systems with fantastic results. Bolton might have a whole bunch of pensioners but they can irritate the big boys. Charlton are riding high up as well despite having spent very little. Palace, look the most likely of the 3 promoted teams to escape relegation.

Today's formation is dynamic. It's a 4-5-1 when defending which crowds out opposition midfields and uses quick wingers to launch counterattacks. There's still the solidity of the back 4 as with the old 4-4-2 but there are 3 central midfielders who are stingy with space. In attacking the formation can shift to a variety of different formations.

Chelsea adopt a 4-2-1-3. That's their usual back 4, Makelele and Tiago, Lampard then Robben, Duff and Drogba. In need of a goal, Makelele and Tiago push higher up to make a 4-3-3. Man Utd use a 4-1-4-1, with their back 4, Keane, Giggs, Ronaldo, Scholes and Rooney then Van Nistelrooy. This changes to a 4-1-2-3 at times, with Ronaldo and Giggs pushing up.

With more central midfielders, the wide players can play higher up. The 4-4-2 has just one defensive midfielder covering the entire pitch so the wide players can't push up as much. So the idea behind the new system is to free up the wide players and encourage counterattacks from the quick pacy wingers. The wide players don't play as wide as traditional wingers who stuck wide right or left and stayed there, usually going straight down the byline to deliver a cross or cutting inside to show off flashy dribbling skills. Today's wingers do all that and switch flanks often, also exchanging positions with the other forwards and midfielders in a new dynamic formation. Ronaldinho is not really a winger or a central attacking midfielder. He's the archtypical hybrid of the two, with dashes of a striker or a forward mixed in as well. His World Player of the Year award underlines the idea that the system has allowed him to flourish. You wouldn't really know where to stick him in a 4-4-2.

Together with the wingers, there is a forward who plays in the hole behind a lone striker. This 4 man attack system puts 4 players close to one another, promoting a quick passing game that uses short, clever little passes to unlock tight defences. The supporting forward plays deep and receives the ball from midfield. His primary role is a playmaker. Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard fit a 4-4-2 system perfectly but seem to have been given new leases of life in their new roles, so much so that everyone thinks these two are the best midfielders in the world at the moment. Again, its the system that has allowed these guys to flourish. In the 4-4-2, they would have to do equal parts defending and attacking. Under the new systems at Chelsea and Pool, they concentrate on driving the team forward something they do best. Rooney fits into the hole either behind Owen or Van Nistelrooy. The maturing of his playing ability has coincided with his new place in the England squad and at Man Utd. He's not a bustling centre forward ala Shearer but rather, a skillful forward who plays better in a deeper role, we only begin to see his passing range and inventiveness now where previously we only saw his finishing and skill.

The one lone striker is the main goal threat. Together with the change in tactical structure has come a crop of strikers adept at playing alone. Van Nistelrooy is the more traditional lone striker. A big burly guy who stays in the 6 yard box. But earlier on in the season, Gudjohnsen fulfilled that role just as well, as he adapted his passing and movement to match the wingers. Eto'o at Barca similarly underlines the idea that the structure of the new system allows more than just one type of striker to fit well. The quick, pacy striker can go it alone too. But perhaps the best person to plonk up front would be Shevchenko, as a complete striker, with power, skill and pace can do everything.

The basis of the new system is a quick passing game with lots of movement and switching of positions. Attacking is swift and lethal and there is a desperate need for lots of pace, skill and inventiveness from all players involved. Clubs in continental Europe have been using this system as they favour keeping the ball on the ground, whereas English clubs tended to employ long balls more often. With the changes in focus toward ball skills, passing and movement, attacking flair and style has become what fans crave. Under the old 4-4-2, attacking teams would suffer from defensive lapses, with Newcastle today being a case in point. Nicky Butt has to cover a lot of ground, whilst the Magpies' back four were never really solid to begin with. Under the new system, Chelsea have a watertight defence on the one hand, but always look dangerous going up front. Although their mentality might be defensive and conservative, their attacking style emerges when they get the ball and you see Robben and Duff in full flow. The only reason why they haven't scored as much is because of inept strikers. Gudjohnsen is not in the same class as the Ronaldos and Shevchenkos. Drogba remains a waste of money, while Kezman seems to like the woodwork a lot.

I don't know who will win the Champions League but I'm predicting its a team that doesn't use a 4-4-2.

Local Flavour

I remember as a kid, someone told me this joke about an Indian man saying something to a Chinese guy who interpreted it as "don't take/hold the round one" "yuan de bu neng na". Can't remember the exact joke. But I thought its such a funny stereotype and wouldn't it be great if you had this fat Indian guy with glasses, a broad grin and a bushy moustache with those words in Chinese font in a speech bubble.
Well anyway that's what I thought last night and I'm gonna make that into a tee-shirt one day. I expanded on that idea and decided that I'd make a whole range of shirts dealing with Singaporean stereotypes from people to food, education to lifestyle. Then when I've got enough designs, I would be able to start a shirt business and trump all those spastic "Singapore is a FINE city" shirts.
Also coming up: an entire comic book featuring the adventures of Yuandebunengna Man TM and his sidekick Specky Boy TM going against his arch nemesis Evil Bus Auntie TM.
Yuandebunengna Man TM sees the injustice of Evil Bus Auntie TM pushing and shoving her way to a seat even though there are plenty available. He reaches into his stomach pouch, ala Doraemon and pulls out an Egg And Cheese Prata TM which lands on Evil Bus Auntie's TM face. She shrieks in horror and begins her lengthy nagging in Cantonese TM, at which point Specky Boy TM takes out his Translator PDA TM from The Oversized Pushcart That Is His Schoolbag TM and turns Evil Bus Auntie's TM foul words into government approved, censorship board passed niceties.
Watch out for future episodes involving Mat Rocker Wannabe TM and Mina-San TM as well Ang Moh Man TM, The Insurance Agent TM, Chain Smoking Char Kway Teow Guy TM, The Taxi Driver TM and many more...

Before the Matrix

Ghostly! Posted by Hello
Before the Matrix trilogy, (They shouldn't have made it a trilogy. The first one was good. After that it was fucking crap) there was Ghost In The Shell. A story about a sexy babe who does funky things to the internet.
Seconds into the opening as I sat in awe at the Empress theatre circa 1998 (or 97 i can't remember!), Singapore Film Festival (tickets courtesy of mom), Major Kusanagi strips off as she jumps off a building. Wide eyed for the next 90 minutes or so, with Hunn next to me, I watched one of the defining Japanese animations of all time.
The sequel to the first movie, Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence has been out for a while now. It also recently came into possession of Tze, who promptly burned it onto some cds, which are now with Hunn, the guy I watched the first installment with, who will now burn me a copy. (hooray for kaizokus all over)
Incidentally, I still haven't watched Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, which is a series. Maybe wif BT, I'll get on that soon. But first, the movie.

After Akira

Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt Posted by Hello
Lotsa new films out and the 3 I really want to watch are all Jap cartoons. Howl's in the cinema on thursday. *crosses fingers* Hunn said he'd burn me a copy of Ghost In The Shell 2. Which leaves Steamboy. Akira creator, Katsuhiro Otomo's latest work.
My mom's old boss was a pretty cool guy. He was also responsible for the really gaudy Golden Village cinemas. But he used to have some pretty cool stuff lying around his office. As a kid, I used to go to my mom's old offices (there were several, they kept moving) all the time. There, I'd rummage through everything! Hehe, from playing a TRON like game on a Mac, to finding those calendars with the near naked girls to this book about some show where its like some super punk/gothic thing where everyone is in some kinda hell and this guy had nails sticking out his head. On retrospect, that was a pretty cool childhood spent alone without any friends huh?
Anyway, among the rubble of exotica, I remember fragments of super cool looking robots. Which later turned out to be the robot vehicles in Akira. And that was my intriguing introduction to Katsuhiro Otomo's legendary work. My mother later acquired all 6 books of the manga while I remember borrowing the laserdisc from my cousin and also downloading the show off kazaa or something like that.
Akira was pretty fucking good. Which makes Steamboy a big deal. It has to come close to that standard. Probably my most anticipated film since 2046.

Miyazaki-san's Latest

Howl's Poster Posted by Hello

On the subject of Japanese cartoons, let's move onto films! With Howl's Moving Castle! Hayao Miyazaki-san's latest work is out in cinemas on Thursday. I have absolutely no idea what its about except that its about a moving castle. The trailer came out on AXN today, and I kinda like the music already. Winston said it was really good but he didn't get some bits.
So I'm really looking forward to watching this with Wenhui soon.
I wonder how it moves.

O.P

We Are~! Posted by Hello

Hehe. Something that gets me up and jumping like a kid are Japanese cartoons. This is a One Piece wallpaper from
Arlong Park. I lurve this anime... It's so emotional and so silly at the same time... Characters drawn to look silly, with ridiculous actions... Like Chopper, the reindeer, who manages to wear a hat over his antlers. This is one of the best cartoons I've watched in a long time. Super funny, exciting, stupid, sad, its just great to watch. Plus... There's Nami... *whee-ooo-weet*...

Winning Eleven 8

Becks in action Posted by Hello
Winning Eleven 8. The holy grail of football gaming has arrived on PC. Since I don't own a PS or an XBOX, its a good thing this came out for PC about the same time as well. Brilliant cos I got it for free thanks to bittorrent and wonderful China. It justs keeps getting better. I'm having problems scoring off the cross but the gameplay, passing, movement is all fantastic. Its just the randomness and realism in the game that makes it so much better than EA Sports' Fifa collection, which only has one advantage in having more real player names and better graphics. WE8 is miles ahead in terms of playability. You don't often score the same goal and the system seems to encourage you to try as much as possible. The cards come less frequently now and you can easily go through a season without getting booked. But, you do get pulled down etc and the ref ignores those as well. Its tough to score and you can go one game 4-0 and lose the next. Brilliant stuff.

Yves Please

Mini Motion Posted by Hello
When BMW bought over MINI and started rolling out the new little automobiles of delight, they also made several other products to add onto the MINI line as accesories for driving. I probably read about it Wallpaper* or somthing. Anyway... This watch is by Yves Behar and its lurvely. The flexible strap can open up to be worn or taken off and you dont have to have a metal clasp or whatever. The display can change angles so you can tell time while driving. Simple, modern and elegant cool.
The MINI Motion collection also includes shoes by Puma, a Samsonite bag, clothing and motion maps.

Gehry Gehry nice

Negative/Positive Display Posted by Hello

Most people know Frank Gehry for his buildings and cardboard chairs. But this is a fabulous watch. Deceptively simple with a twist. The time is shown in analog fashion using digital numbers, a throwback to time telling of old. Its 8 til 10 not 9.52. I love this. I want it. Did you know this is a Fossil watch as well?
Elegant, thin black leather strap. Formal enough for meetings and black tie events. Yet subtly cool and understated. Check out how the numbers are made of fragmented bits.

Looking like S+ARCK

Rosendahl Digital Posted by Hello
This is actually by Fleming Bo Hansen and its a Rosendahl product. Which makes them Danish. Its actually the right size that I'd like the Starck fossil to be. But this one seems to have numbers that aren't as nice. I also think its too blah.

Really Pricey Digital

Ventura Sparc Posted by Hello

And now comes the Rolls Royce of digital watches. Ventura makes some really expensive digital watches that are nice but just absurdly priced. Nice I suppose, but I don't feel the design is worth the big bucks.

Not a transformer

The Megatron Posted by Hello

Nixon makes some pretty neat watches. Pretty guy-ish men's line. The Megatron is a nice digital one I find simple and attractive. Also check out The Tron and The Dork among their other watches as well. Simple, nice and all but just a bit blah, but really nice blah.

Clip On's

Vessel Tempo Time Tag Posted by Hello

This is the Vessel Tempo Time Tag. Super small little clips that show digital time. The idea is you tag it everywhere, like post its. Kinda cool I suppose. But it doesn't cut it as a watch, which represents so much. Almost wanted to buy a few. USD$18 from
Vessel

Diesel makes watches too!

Diesel Digital Perf Posted by Hello
Not just jeans and dumb ads. This one I chanced upon in a shop window. Again too thick. Laterally. It was seriously clunky and too "manly~man". I just didn't want a clunk that looked too heavy to be worn. But the great thing about it is that it also doubles as a perfect leather strap, another one of those things that I wanted to get but never did.

Naoto the paoto

Naoto keeps it simple Posted by Hello
OK. This one is kinda like Starck's low cost watch as well I think. Just a concept by Naoto Fukasawa. Its a sorta seamless watch with like a EL display on the fabric strap. I'm just a sucker for the vertical hour/minute display. Plus its like super ultra minimalist and I'm pretty sure the details in a real life production model of this watch would be to die for.

Cheap S+ARCK?

Low Cost Watch Posted by Hello
This was one I saw in the book, Designing the 21st Century. Its supposed to be a low cost watch for 7-11, would you believe... Well, anyway, I believe that this watch is nonexistent and probably a prototype of some sort. If it actually went into production as a low cost watch... Lovely, simple, and wif a little bump that just breaks the monotony. Nice contrast of colours as well. I would die for one with yellow numbers. This baby remains a dream.

More S+ARCK

S+ARCK 2003 Posted by Hello
This one is by Starck as well for Fossil again in 2003. I actually prefer this one to the more organicky fossils. I feel here the digital numbers go nicely wif the squareness of the watch itself. Almost everything I'd want maybe... But it lacks a certain quirkiness to it. Too normal/expected?

S+ARCK Contrast

S+ARCK Posted by Hello

I can't remember when that Frenchie decided to come out wif that Fossil watch. I remember a friend getting an orange one and my mother has one as well. OK. When it came out I kinda wanted one because it was remarkably simple compared to all the other digital watches I'd seen before. It was like a moment of "Hey! That's what I always wanted but never knew!".

But it wasn't everything I dreamed of. Mostly because I thought it was way too fat, although the ladies version was slightly slimmer, I still disliked its clunkiness.

Recently Fossil came out with a new version where the LED is like... printed on the skin of the watch. I think its ugly. They also have these rings and bracelets as well. Well anyway, thank you Meeester Starck for getting me crazy over digital watches.

Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy Watch from SEIKO Posted by Hello
Not my dream watch really. An extreme of clunky super digital design dependant too much on techno-futurism. Too techy/tacky. Anyway this watch came off a thread on watches which rekindled my watch desires. Core 77 had this thread on watches which got posted on the main blog. Hehe so I rediscovered the pimp watches and all the others that I knew I loved so I decided to compile my own list.
At one point in my life, (21 I think...) I stopped wearing watches altogether and decided to go wrist naked. Cos my swatches were too kiddo and my tag died and well I just couldn't find one I really liked. Until the Starck fossil watch made me wanna get a digital watch.

Small Wrists?

Excite by Rhix Posted by Hello
This lil bracelet comes in a really small size and won't even fit my wrist. Only for people with 17cm or smaller wrists. Hence I didn't buy it. Notwithstanding the fact I also find the body rather thick and all. Plus, if you look beyond the red acrylic, the LCD looks really wimpy, like a cheapo casio that you can get for $5. Also comes in black and green.
From the website where you can get the pimp watches online as well. Tokyoflash.

Japanese Beng

Pimpin Ain't Easy Posted by Hello

This is Pimpin Ain't Easy by the same company Pimp.

"We produce super-quality limited edition watches in outragous designs never made before. Combining 70's style with future modern day concepts. Trends are fine but being unique is even better"

In Singapore, this watch would be called Beng-ing Ain't Easy (beng-ing = to be a beng) given its rows of blue LEDs, much like those cars with the downlights or headlights that shine so bright. I saw one guy wif this trip out mitsu lancer and the road was awash in a blue glow as he sped along to some shitty techno.

Hmm maybe I ought to start importing this baby.

Watch This Space

Trip The Light Fantastic Posted by Hello

Some years ago, I remember my mother telling me about this watch with like no hands or numbers. It wasn't analog or digital. It was like rows of coloured lights that you had to learn how to read to tell the time... I thought "Wow~! Cool~!" (Of course, now I think they're terrible timepieces but nice wrist attachments)
I also now know that they're the Pimp watches. This one above is the Trip The Light Fantastic watch by Pimp

OMG

Happy Valentine's Day

They keep coming one after another. These damn special occasions. My mother won't even believe what I tell her and now she's pissed off with my attitude when I try to help her with pshop. Oh well~!

Happy CNY

Yay~! Its Chinese New Year... Who cares... I've been having miserable holidays since xmas. Anyway... just decided to reblog again... Maybe this time I'll spend more time on it and one day find some sort of dedicated purpose to it... Like a blog on cameras or something like that...

On that note, I just received a drybox to hoard away my camera collection, which at the moment stands as follows:
1. Polaroid Spectra 1200
2. Polaroid One Step
3. Smena 8M
4. Holga
5. Holga Micro
6. Seagull 海鷗
7. Argus C-3
8. Zorki 10

Yes its pathetic cos most of the cams arent pro cams or whatever... I just like how they look and the fact that they're lousy, cheap cameras. Next up in the pipeline are a white SX-70 and a compact automat. Maybe a diana.
